Council cutbacks mean Mayo streets are not cleaned at weekends

Cut backs in funding to Mayo County Council are beginning to impact on the services being provided by the council, councillors in the Claremorris electoral area were told this week.

Like marathons, election campaigns are long journeys more often suited to the long distance runner then to the sprinter. As on all long journeys events can happen and change predictions that seemed definite at the outset, this is especially true when it’s a political journey. Bear that in mind as we begin the coverage of the local election campaign scheduled for next June. Mayo county councillors racked up more than €800K in six months

Figures released by Mayo County Council under the Freedom of Information Act have revealed that Mayo county councillors were paid out €836,212 from January to the end of June 2009, all relating to the six months pre-election. Independent Castlebar Councillor Frank Durcan who sought this information said that these figures are “immoral in the times that are in it”.
